LAMBRETTA MODEL 125 SPECIAL HISTORY

As the natural evolution of the 125 LI Series III, the Lambretta 125 Special was put on the market at the end of 1965 just in time for the annual motorcycle show in Milan. The new model was designed for a young audience that wanted a sporty scooter with outstanding performance and a "customized" look. The bodywork was essentially the same as the tried-and-true 150 Special, except for the metallic blue paint.

Apart from the long, dual-passenger bench seat, changes occurred to the light controls, the anti-theft key, and the modified writing to identify the model. With minor but important adjustments to the compression ratio and the cylinder, the power of the motor was raised above seven horsepower, which permitted the Lambretta to reach 86 km/h with the driver in an aerodynamic position.

To take advantage of the maximum acceleration possible, the gear ratio was slightly reduced without increasing the consumption of gasoline too much.

In the three years that the 125 was produced, no relevant modifications took place apart from the glovebox changed to be made totally out of plastic and the Innocenti coat-of-arms being substituted with a rectangular chrome one. The high 150,000 Italian lira price tag was certainly the main cause for the lack of success of the Lambretta 125 Special. To give an example of the difference in production numbers, only a few less than 30,000 units of the 125 Special were produced compared to the 146,000 of the normal LI.
